A charming place, Cha-am is. We travelled 2 hours by road towards north west coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Our stay started at Sabaya Jungle Resort which is 10 min walk away from Cha-am beach bustling street for 1 night and continued to Alila, Cha-am for another 2 nights stay.

Khun Duangrit Bunnag's work hit us like a wonderful cool breeze. It was an atheistic experience, stimulating our senses and opening our eyes to what architecture can do to a piece of land. A wonderful experience indeed.

On my baby blog I wrote about this wonderfully authentic restaurant called Kratip Restaurant in Bangkapi Mall, Bangkok. At first it feels so strange to have those working there treating you like friends instead of patrons but after awhile of their warm reception, especially to my little one, I decided it was the best eating place it became our fave. local hangout (other than Mothercare, Thonglor and etc;p). The atmosphere is so like you are in your fave. pub where everybody knows each other.

You can be sure to be served with wonderfully brashly flavoured Isaan cuisine with performing local artistes singing Thai oldies & current songs. My favorite is the serpent head fish in coconut sour soup (Tom ka plaa).

SATUN, SOUTHERN THAILAND TRIP 19 - 21.07.09

This marks the first trip for us; a family of three, since our return from Malaysia during the May 2009 Harvest Festival in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Baby Apsie and me tagged along hubby to a 700 years old fisherman village called Kampung Che Bilang in Satun a Muslim-majority province in southern Thailand and experienced harmonious life among the Muslims, Buddhists and others.

The wonderful story of how the village came to its name is both memorable and heart-warming. The story goes -

One day a pirate from the high seas landed in a fisherman's village along the Andaman seas and saw a lady with her virgin beautiful daughter. He decided to make the virgin his own so he kidnapped both ladies and smuggled them to his ship. His act was found out by the matriarch of the ladies family who had came from the far away land called Java. He rushed to the shore and called out to the retreating boat to give back his wife and virgin daughter!

The pirate just laughed, certain that the father can't do much on land. The matriarch called again and shouted that if his demands are not met, he will pull the boat back to shore and rescue his family. The pirates laughed again and true to his word, the matriarch pulled at the boat anchor rope stranding it to shore.

Full of awe the pirate said,'Cek adalah orang yang terbilang' and gave back the father his wife and daugther before escaping back to sea. And so the village is called 'Cheebilang' after its strongest occupant.

This is my version of the story - facts may defer;p

Don Hoi Lot & Amphawa Floating Market Trip 6.09.08

Though I am 8 months pregnant, I was still game enough go for a day trip to Don Hoi Lot (Gulf of Thailand) and Amphawa Floating market. We had lunch at one of the restaurant near the sea and feasted on a buffet of exotic seafood which we couldn't get in Bangkok. There was the dinosour crabfish, yabbies, curry crab, fresh steam fish, Ota-ota (fish dumpling), hot tom yum goong and of course my favorite crab with grass noodles in the hotpot.

Afterwards, we wandered around the fish market that sales bulk dried seafood like fish stick, dried squid and shrimp which my sister bought to bring home and share with family back in Singapore.

We continued our journey to Amphawa Market and there's just so many people. Hubby Philip went to check out the resort around the area while we walked from one end to another enjoying the sights of locals buying local produce and fresh food. We tasted thai dessert which is similar to Leong Fun back home but with a dash of palm toddy and syrup.

Mione had fun with her stick ice cream and was reluctant to share it mum wherelse Mummy Uaa and Daddy Wee Lee was busy capturing Mione's antic through their digital camera lenses. You can see a collection of the photos in the slide show above.

Vientiane, here I am - 17.07.08

Vientiane! We finally arrived here at 1.30pm, 17.07.2008 and I love the city. It reminds me of the old Kota Kinabalu.

The journey started at 9.00am where we lined up at the Thai-Lao International bus counter for an hour just to be told that there's only 1 seat available for the 10.30am 2nd class coach. While waiting to buy tickets for the next trip, the officer announced that the first bus had an accident and we have to come back at 10.30am to buy the tickets.

So we had a leisurely breakfast near the terminal, bought the tickets at appointed time and rushed back to the hotel to check out & get our luggages. Lunch was a hurried affair of pork noodle soup and boarded the bus at exactly 11.28am. The bus depart at 11.34am! Talk about on time!

Upon reaching Nong Khai, we hurried down to get our passport chopped by the Thai immigration, then we boarded the bus just to go down again after a short 30 minutes ride at the Laos immigration. Here we were given arrival & departure card to fill at the immigration check in (details are not thoroughly checked) and proceeded to the entrance fee counter to pay a bht10 each. I think there's a luggage scanner but nobody seems to use it. Then it was home free. It took us another hour of nice and scenic ride to reach Vientiane.

We went straight to our hotel at Mali Namphu Guest House at 109 Pangkham Road, tel: +856-21-215093 for a standard room priced at USD19.00

Hungry for Laos cuisine, we walked left of our hotel towards the river and found a nice riverside restaurant and ordered jeun khai with muu (omelette with pork), khao phat muu (fried rice with pork) for me and khao neung (plain rice) for Philip, piing muu (grilled pork) and maak phao (coconut), YUMMY!

Passing through Intercity Hotel, we saw a banner for a 2 hour Laos Traditional massage for USD10.00 or RM33.00. So Philip decided to try it out while I went in search of a cyber cafe!

And here I am......

Udon Thani, Thailand - 16.07.2008

Currently at Udon Thani which is on the north east Thailand for a nite before crossing the border to Laos. Staying at one of the best hotel (Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel) in town for a double bed standard room costing bht1400 in town.

Will catch the the 2nd class coach at 10.30 but we would have to go to the terminal by 9.00 to get our passport checked and tickets (bht85/pax/way). A good thing we are Malaysians because visa is not necessary. I would have to update as to why later. This will be my last overseas travel before baby comes into the world so am excited with this trip.

Hanoi, Vietnam Trip - 14.06.2008!

I was so excited to be in Hanoi, Vietnam. I had so many friends from Vietnam back at Uni years and it's like visiting their hometown. Of course the fact that it's Philip's & my 1st wedding anniversary made the trip more romantic!

Upon arrival we straight away went in search of Pho, the famous vietnamese noodle soup and it was just as good as we have imagine it. Then we found pathfinder magazine that helped us a lot in reference to local street fares that we saw locals consumed with such gumption.

My favorite dish is called Com Rang - wok fried, often served with beef/chicken, spring rolls and cabbage at 39 Ma May near Handspan Adventure Travel Agency. We also tried Xoi - yellow sticky rice topped with healthy options like coconut, sesame or sliced bean cake (the greasier version is with pork ribs, chicken or chicken sausage), Pho Bo, Vietnamese spring roles and Nuoc Mia Da (sugar-cane juice freshly squeezed served together with a pinch of lime), YUMMY!!!

Overall the staff at Classic Street Hotel also known as Pho Cho Hotel were very helpful and the proprietress was nice enough to give us a room on the 3rd floor due to my condition (was 5 months pregnant). The puppet show at Thang Long Water Puppet was so much fun and going to the 3000 years old village in Hanoi was a revelation. Now I know what they mean one product one village is! We were lucky that Handspan Adventure Travel was near the hotel, who's sales person & tour guide was great in suggetions & practical advices!

Dumneon Saduak Floating Market - 1.06.08

From Kanchanaburi, we got into a rented van for 1300bht to take a 2 hours ride to Dumnoen Saduak District, Ratchaburi Province (105km West of Bangkok). We stayed at Ban Suk Chok Resort at Thambon Tha Nat, tel: 03 225 4892.

We rented a 3 bedroom cabin for 1000bht. Do not expect a clean and new surroundings because it is not but still it is comfortable enough for a nite sleep.

That afternoon we went to Talat Nam Amphawa - a 2 hours hired boat trip from the resort at 1500bht return trip. It rained when we were walking in the market but I appeased my cravings for thai sweets with buying a lot of the coconut sauced goodies, cookies and sweet rice crackers. I've wrote about the market here also.

The next day, a Sunday again we took a 15 minutes boat ride and this time its to the largest floating market in Thailand - Dumneon Saduak Floating market. I was dissapointed with the fares available at this market because they are mostly souvenirs and light food & beverages. I only bought jackfruit & pomelo for the trip back to Bangkok and nothing else.

JUMP - Comic Martial Arts Performance in Bangkok

Thai Cooking Class at Kanchanaburi - 30.05.08!

We had another chance to go to Kanchanaburi, about 2 hours south of Thailand where it is famous for its River Kwai and Tiger Temple. Catch a bus at the Southern Bus Teminal in Bangkok and a one way ticket is around 105bht per person.
Upon reaching at our guesthouse (Ploy Guesthouse - a stylish tropical retreat at 79/2 Maenam Kwai Rd, Kanchanaburi Province, Tel: (034) 515 804), we decided to go for a cooking class which is around 750bht per person and it includes a trip to the local market and learn how to cook 3 traditional Thai dishes (green curry, phanaeng & pad thai) instead of visitng the temples again.
In this class we learnt that and more! Chef Mickey was such an entertaining host that we all enjoyed ourselves enormously.

PS: I've tried cooking tom yum goong, green curry & pad thai at home and let me tell you the lessons really worked in terms of self confidence and measurements! I made a mean tom yum & green curry! Though I might have to get more practice on the pad thai coz hubby thought mine was too sweet....;)

Kanchanaburi Tiger Temple Trip - 11 - 13.o1.2008

A continuation from my bus trip from the Southern Bus Terminal. We went on a trip to the Tiger Temple (Wat Luang Ta Bua Yanna Sampanno) and coincidently it is near the Mae Nam Kwai River where a movie titled 'The Bridge Over River Kwai' was made. We stayed next to beautiful River Kwai and I hope all will enjoy my video which I took with our canon digital camera.

It was wild and untamed, this forest monastry. I was unprepared when the volunteers started feeding the animals rite in front of me and was so afraid that I stood stock still with my video still recording. The results was magnificent! I can even now feel the rough fur of the wild boar as they brushed gently against me to get to the food next to my right foot.

The wat is famed for taking in wild tigers amids rumours that the abbot buy these animals for touristic purposes. Whatever the reason that maybe, I see an operation that is maintain by a mum and pop establishment and it is rustically appealing.

May it continue to stay and bring pleasure for all person who visits and believe that human and wild beasts can co-exist.

Southern Bus Terminal, Bangkok - 11.01.2008

After getting use to the havocs of old bus terminals in Bangkok, the new Southern Bus Terminal is a revelation. You can have a bus terminal as big as an airport with the same layout (though most of the signages are still in Thai with no English translation). Thank god for information booth. We took this trip to go to the famous Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi and hope the video can open your eyes as to how esay it is to travel by bus in Bangkok, Thailand.

Thai Polls & Analysis

I was guided to a post by New Mandala on the Thai Polls 2007. Please read his analysis for indept view of the above map.

His analysis reflect grass roots opinions. Though the interim government have announced that a coalition government will have their first meeting on the 30th day after the polls, but it seems that the government are formed already & expected announcments will be done 2 weeks after New Year.

The best news I've heard is that this pollings seems to be as clean as it possibly can, though theres a lot of talk about transparency issues (ie. the pre-polling of 3 million voters a week before the 23rd).

Above all, the coup of 19th September 2006 - dubbed as the the 'coup for the rich' is reinstated by the results in the polls.

Finally it is safe for me to say that Thailand politics have enter the new world, started by the Thaksin government and it seems its here to stay.

Thailand Goes to Poll!!!

As the Thais goes to vote on 23rd December 2007, we are all on a 'look & see' mode, this being the first election after the September coup in 2006 (which spells the end of democracy to a lot of people - internationaly & locally).

Relatively, this election was peaceful & actually far from violent. A relief for the Thais & expats alike. Business as usual seems to be the consensus here.

The above pictures were taken during campaigning in the South & North East of Thailand. The next post will give more details & analysis of the results. So please explore more!

Interesting propaganda and I must say, Malaysians are getting very creative. Previously, we'll have chainletters, advertisements and now a movie remixed to convey the maker's message.

Chiang Rai Hill Tribe Project Visit (November 2007)

As the photos says it all, we had an eye opener trip visiting the hill tribe communities Akha & Lahu tribe in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The trip was carefully organised by Mirror Foundation, an NGO operating which helped with the tribes' transition into modern society. While watching the slide, you'll get glimmers of tribal life in the highlands. The effect of modernisation and this new way of life had and have its rocky transitions but change they did. Some tribes seem to fare better than their counterparts but the overall perception of the community (which includes the head leaders) seems to favour the change.

In the end change seems to hold no stop for the families here from growing up with the best of two worlds. Knowledge of the highland lifestyle and living in the lowlands.

Look at her(left)! She's just gorgeous! She's Ms Tiffany International 2007 and now Ms Queen International 2007, Pattaya, Thailand.

Compare with normal old me, you can see how beautiful she (transgender) is! I watched these gals worked very hard to get the show on the road (at Ms Tiffany, Pattaya)- and may I add very successfully at that. Seeing the gals' tears, frustration and the mounting pressure of the competition made the whole event rigged with suspense and excitement.

Being immersed in a 'community that worship beauty' it made me realise that in this world we live-in is big with diverse cultures waiting to be explored.

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Though this forum (http://www.sabahforum.com/forum/index.php) is in mixed malay-english, it keeps me abreast with what's happening at home, Sabah, East Malaysia.

I like to read the http://www.sabahforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=14 partly because of it's gossip on political views of individuals. Amusing and entertainting, making the forum a place for everyone. We are lucky to be allowed to do so, unlike other countries.

Finally reconciled to the fact that politics is a human element which means with many handicaps, most political intitution make decision based on 'in the name of OUR people....!' to justify actions that mostly are beyond 'us' The People! Ironic isn't it?

Anyhow, am very lucky to be a citizen of peaceful Malaysia, where public forum is not a death sentence but a mean of expressing oneself.

I end with a question which one should ask self,'would you - a citizen, rather be shot to death just by murmuring dissent in public forums (the incidental soldier?) such as this?'. The answer is always up to you -the citizen (or not?).

To tell you the truth, Malaysia & Thailand can't use this at the moment - it's more expensive! But friends from Japan can! It's clear (my first testing was for free!). Using this application a mobilephone user in Japan call local to international numbers & pay only local rates - mind you the first 100 minutes are free!!!

Being in beta form, I hope this application will hurry up and include more asian countries coz the it can be so useful to expats (ie: calling using your mobilephone is a big plus +++++....!

It started out bad with the moto driving off with us on their back and not knowing where to go to the budget hotel where I booked earlier telling me that they are full and the only room available was the penthouse. With disgust we went out, found the tuk tuk station and were ripped off by 40bht extra (actual fare is only 20bht) just to go to the next block.

The weekend seemed bleak with steamy hot weather and us being tired we managed to check into better boutique hotels for the next two days. Enjoy our Hua Hin photo essay!

Muak Lek District - A Place Which Is Not In Lonely Planet

It was a long weekend trip to visit Khao Yai Winery in the Muak Lek District just before Isaan, Thailand. We took the public bus at Bangkok's Mo Chit Norteastern Bus Station.

We anticipated a challenging time to find the right bus but to our relief the station was well manned with English speaking information counter staffs and well numbered counter.

We were told that the bus was leaving in 6 minutes after paying for our tickets of 92bht each (one way). A staff accompanied us to the bus, thoughtfully enquiring whether we wanted to go to the loo before boarding.

Reaching Muak Lek, Cabbages & Condoms Saptai Resort friendly PR rep (Khun Pon) met us warning us that our True mobile phone reception would be none existent!

Excited to reach this uniquely named resort, the view started to look like cowboy country, dairy farms are scattered along the road together with vineyards. It feels like we're in Europe.

Early the next morning after breakfast, we caught a ride with CC's vehicle to Khao Yai winery. Enjoying the fresh air, we went to the winery. Expecting to see a normal cellar, we were suprised to see modern equiptments together with huge wine barrels.

I only use friendster.com to update and communicate with my INTAN Junior Chamber of Junior Chamber Malaysia International members and one day I found out about the 'Rock You' leave a voice message programme....It's totally FREE!

I got so excited that I've had one up in my friendster that very second (hehehe....it took me awhile to figure out about the html, but i got it!). The only problem with the service is that everyone have to call a US number and leave a voice message.

Imagine my dissapointment...What a down-er! It actually cost more to leave a voicemail in friendster.com for all my Asian friends as compared to leaving a voicemail with my Malaysian mobilephone which the provider (digi.com.my) will forward to my email!

CLASHES OF THE TITANS

We used to live at the 21st floor in Evergreen Tower condominium along the Bangna-Trad highway in Bangkok and one day while getting ready for work, I looked out of the window and saw this amazing view of the elements.

I see a colourful rainbow on my left and the dark thunderous clouds on my right all at once, in fact I can photograph it in one click of the camera. It seems like the rainbow is in the middle of chasing away the blues of the world.

Hope such visual will give fortitude to anyone who needs it and good luck to all out there who are making it in this world.

The Fishes at Thewes Jetty, Bangkok

Wow! There's so many fishes. Looks like that movie called 'The Host' babies, looking as if they eat human flesh. Vendors lined up selling bags of feed and bread for 40bht - 80bht.

Instead the fishes are - the ever popular and a delicacy in Thailand, the cat fish and 'batin' fish, swimming freely against the current at Thewes Jetty, Stop no. 15, fares at 13bht - 18bht from Central Pier, Saphan Taksin.

Trip to Samut Songkhram

On a lazy Sunday, My husband and I along with the thai class group (Jovelle (filipino), Moni (Cambodian), Said (Kahsmiri) accompanied by Ajan Miaow (Thai) was waiting for the van which will take us to Samut Songkhram (Gulf of Siam). For more photos please click here.

The first stop was breakfast or should I say brunch. Delicious scallops at 20bht for 5 pcs straight from the griller, miles and miles of sandbed due to low tide (you can hired a boat to the sea - half hour ride for only 50bht!) and ohhhhh so fresh seafood, which locals have for picnics with around Don Hoi Lot.

Stopping at one very interesting temple (Wat), the most famous abot's body still in pristine condition is kept at a glass room where devotees can visit and pay merits. Near the glass room there's a beautiful stuppa containing the Lord Buddha's relic surrounded by golden mystical statues.

Last but not least is the Talat Nam Amphawa! Beautiful shops, a bit of the old, a bit of the young. Wonderful food, loads to shop about and a thriving floating market where we had our delicious porky noodle soup.

We finished the trip with a boat ride to see the fireflies. It was a good ending for a good trip.
